more Vintage

Ta-Da! Here's some serious vintage for you: this dress was $16 at Buffalo Exchange, the boots are a relic from the 80s (god bless mothers who hang on to the good stuff) and, well, the tights are from Uniqlo but...

Detail shot. This ring!!! A gorgeous camio, $60 at O Mistress Mine...take THAT, Urban Outfitters, this is the real thing.

We're a big fan of the knapsack trend...the weathered leather ones are especially nice. This royal blue coat is also lovely. Don't you think? Of course you do.

Here's a cute little vintage-y outfit. It's a little monotone, but subway lights will do that, plus it just adds to that faded antique effect we find so charming.

Here's the second batch of our trip to the Met yesterday. As you can see, some people really made an effort to to distract from the brightest, most well known pieces in the museum (cough*gold jacket, blue poncho*cough)

These two are both very simple, but elegant. The silhouette on the right is especially charming, and she smartly accents the black and white with a bright red bag
and (though you can't really see it) coat.

At the Met

A rainy Sunday afternoon is best spent indoors...and so rather than surrendering to homework, we spent the day uptown looking at art...and people.

Here's a few favorites (more tomorrow). Leather is probably the hero of this story: jacket and boots and bag (sooooo nice) on the left, boots in the middle, pants on the right. Appologies for the shoddy photos, but if you look closely at the photo on the right, you'll see a fabulous black fur vest. Click to enlarge.

The big story today seemed to be hats and fur. Let's see...top left: we loooove how the folds in her chic little cap mirror those in her coat. Top right: the little bowler hat is totally boyish and great, emphasized by the fact that she's walking next to man.

The fur coat on the left is really dramatic, and she really amps it up by wearing her hair down with it, it's totally wild. The look on the right is very vintage; it's super clean and adorable. We love it.

That Bag

Hotttttttt. I wanted this photo before I even noticed the kisses etched into all that shiny, gorgeous leather. Jealousy abounds.

We thought this guy really said it all about NYU.

The coat on the left is a BCBG coat that we got for $22 (!!) at Buffalo Exchange on our vintage rampage this past weekend. The dress on the right is of unknown origin; we just like it for the nautical vibes, and thought it goes well with the BCBG outfit (hemline, colored tights...)

Have you been to Coney Island lately? Neither has anyone else. In keeping with our last post, however, we thought we'd give you another dosage of weird. The theme park closed down several months ago, and as though it wasn't freaky enough to begin with, the emptiness and gray winter skies added a whole new layer of eerie. The enormous housing projects in the background really stand out, too.

It was a nice surprise to walk down Houston and suddenly find ourselves inside a tent full of carnival-esque antiques. Items were spilling out on to the sidewalk, the whole spectacle was eerie and unreal.

Billy's Antiques and Props is located at 76 E Houston, open 1pm-8pm seven days a week, weather permitting, and has everything from rocking chairs to a glass fortune teller, not to mention vintage street signs and old movie props; we highly recommend a visit to fully appreciate all of the oddities it has to offer.

And if you ever need a severed head, they've got that too.

O Mistress Mine, on 11th between 2nd and 1st ave (or is it 2nd and 3rd?) is a GOLD MIIIIIINE! Especially is your wallet is full of GOOOOOLD. But actually, there are some deals to be found. And the woman who owns the shop (Wanda Hanlon) is so fantastic and friendly, it's worth stopping in just to say hi. She's been in the business for over 40 years, and has, as she says, "a lot of connections."

You can find hats and coats and dresses and shoes and jewlery from the 20s and beyond. (We saw a pre-Victorian ring [!] it was gorgeous. obviously.)

The Cure, a thrift shop on 12th between 2nd and 3rd ave, is a bit more accessible. All proceeds go to benefit Diabetes research, so you don't have to feel to guilty about spending.

There's something for everyone here. They've got tons of beautiful antique furniture, art, and things things things.

And best of all, they've got loads of inexpensive clothing from designer to god-knows-what.

We also hit Buffalo Exchange, just down the block from O Mistress Mine, and found it to be infinitly superior to the Buffalos in Denver and Seattle. SO it's probably better than yours, too.

That Jacket

Yessssss. This coat was definitely worth the splurge. Normally real fur (and yes, that's real fur) makes us cringe a little, but how can you say no to that level of fabulous? And, really, it's so shiny. And plush. We just want to curl up in it like the kitty that died for that hood. (ok, it was a bunny. Or something.)

This one's for the boys:
We just noticed this one: patterned shirt, patterned scarf, same color pallet.
It's kind of charming.
